How God works in you; an amazing truth! - Day 14: Thirty Day Meditations to Abundant Life!

God "is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us..."  Eph 3:20

Of course God is able to do far more than anything we could ever ask of Him or even think or desire. And you know what else? He's not only able, He's more than willing! But here's the thing... many of God's children think that because He is the One doing the doing (i.e. the work of getting such things) they seem to think that they have no part in it. Sure they won't tell you this directly; it's more like a mindset that we are scarcely even aware of. It manifests itself in the way people pray and then look to heaven for the answer to come... they sit there, looking up, sighing, waiting and waiting more and still nothing comes. Why? It's because the answer is in them, not up in heaven!

Did you get that? The way God is "able to do exceedingly abundantly" in your life, is through you! You're looking up and He's saying "Why are you looking up? Look inside!" Read Eph 3:20 carefully again and you'll see it so clearly [O how many years did I read this and totally missed it!]. God works to accomplish great things but He does it through His power that is already in you!

"The word is in you; it is in your mouth and in your heart...." Rom 10:8

In fact, Paul was writing earlier in his letter to the Ephesian church that he wanted them to know, among other things, that the power of God - even the power that raised Jesus from the dead - worked in them! It takes the Spirit of God to reveal this to us.

The same Power that said "Let Light be" and then there was light in the midst of the darkness, is at work in you - take a moment to go 'wow!' And the same Power that commanded the stars to shine and the earth to bring forth life is in you. The same Power that raised Jairus' daughter from her sickly death, is at work in you! The same Power that turned a little boy's lunch into a feast that fed thousands is at work in you! And the same Power that told the fish to swallow two coins, keep them in it's mouth and then be caught by Peter that day is also in you (small things count too you know!)

So how does this actually work? Well, say you are praying for an increase in income - I know many of you want this, no, even need this. The Lord won't automatically bring this income. But suddenly you'll think of ideas and opportunities will come your way as you seek and wait for Him to answer you. So what happened? God did the work, but He did it by using you, through His power in you.

Or say some one you love is sick. Take them to the doctor and treat them medically, by all means. But why not do what the Bible says; get some oil, call the saints around you and pray for them, laying hands on them. Believe it is God's will to always heal (consider that Jesus never said no to a single request for healing; and He does not change); so believe Him and heal! Afterall, what's the good of praying for God to heal, when you don't realize that His power to heal is actually in you already?!

Or perhaps, here's a last example, you are asking the Lord for your dream soul-mate. So you go and you search and every time you meet someone with whom you exchange a fleeting glance, you'll be burning with expectation and curiosity as to whether they are the one! How about, instead of doing that, you chose to strengthen your soul in the Lord, focusing on His love for you, His favor on you and His joy, taking liberty in your life to enjoy and truly live it, and then see how from the light and life that bursts in your heart you will be attracting the one without having to constantly be on the lookout, exhausting yourself with daydreams of this or that acquaintance. I personally vouch for this; it works!

So what's the bottom line? Understand who you are in Christ and how you have already been endowed with power for the unimaginable to occur through you... it is God's doing, from beginning to end, but you are His conduit for just that!

"Jesus said to them, 'They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.'" (Matt 14:16)
