Don't be afraid of the lion in the streets

What do you do when terror strikes your land? Do you run and flee, hide and cower, pray and hope for the best?

The lazy man says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!" (Prov. 22:13)

A few nights ago I had a dream; I was on lonely, beautiful country road. It was dusk and, rather interestingly, I seemed to have been riding a white steed calmly climbing the hill up ahead. Suddenly, a lion appeared in front of us. Skinny and scraggly, he looked old and had a distinctly poor look on his face. He saw us too and though he didn't lounge at us right away, fear struck my heart.

Hastily, I turned my mighty horse backward and we sped away. The lion chased us. Ahead of us was a huge embankment. My horse jumped over it yet the lion followed. Several times this happened, till finally a huge wall stood in our path, stopping us in our tracks. The lion was closing in on us and so I urged my horse to jump it and he did... but the lion couldn't.

It was then that I woke up, chagrined and frustrated that I had let the lion have the better of me... "Why was I afraid?" I wondered to myself. Half asleep, I went back to dreaming and purposely changed the way that nightmare ended! (Yes, it's cheating... but then again, it's the good kind of cheating!)

Do you know that God has promised every one of His children great protection? Really! Jesus took the stroke of every evil and the destruction of every curse... so that the hammer wouldn't fall on you and you'd be blessed with the blessing of Abraham (see Gal 3).

So listen and hear what God told Abraham because He tells you the same today, "Do not be afraid, My child. I Am your shield!" (Gen 15:1)

You see, I know and believe what I'm about to tell you... the world's way of thinking is to always be afraid, always calculating risk, always hoping for the best but expecting the worst. But you on the other hand, you know your inheritance in Christ, that though you are in this world, you are not of it. That's why you can rest joyfully in the Lord despite the terror of war, the drudgery of recession or the threat of disease.

But I want to encourage you today, that whether you're on the road to work, on the way to make a visit or just going to the beach, go in peace and assurance, singing to your Father and thanking Him, "Blessed am I when I come in, and blessed am I when I go out." (Deut 28:6) The Bible doesn't have God's promises of protection strewn all over the place for nothing... they are their for you. Please don't take my word for it... but take His.

Always remember, He is your shield and your strength... the next time you meet a lion on the road, don't move out of the way... the road is yours and he has no right to it!

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Pet 5:8
