Your Father is a resting God

He rested from all His work”. Gen 2:3

I find this funny. God rests? Yes, in fact not only does He rest but His heart is to lead you to true rest. Listen to Joshua, who came just after Moses and is a foreshadowing of Jesus not only in that he has the same name but in his purpose too, telling his people “Yahowa your God is giving you rest…” and then fast forward 1400 years and listen to Jesus of Nazareth telling you the same “Come to Me and I will give you rest”. God’s heart is for you to enter this rest, not just in heaven etc, but now. This is rest from trying to please God and man. Rest from worry, from striving in futility, from living from one day to the next in a sea of purposelessness.

Joshua led the children of Israel out of a desert where they had wandered aimlessly for 40 years, living from the manna (angels’ bread) that God provided them. They could have crossed the globe, built cities or at least developed in some way, yet like forgotten potatoes in a corner of a cabinet, they sat there day after day, just a stone’s throw away from the promised land. This is for our instruction and is symbolic. Maybe today you find yourself in such a land, aimlessly wandering, living on automatic pilot, yet God has better things for you.

These wanderings ended when Moses died and Joshua became the leader. Likewise, “The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17. This is key; the moment you realize that God isn’t interested in your sacrifices, your rituals or even your moral codes you put yourself in a position to receive the grace and truth revealed in Jesus – even if you’ve failed a thousand times, listen to Jesus telling you “My beloved child, My grace I give you even more, because of what I've done you're always righteous, now come to Me, learn from Me, rise and march forward, for in Me you have always abundant rest”.
