What do you call God?

But as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. John 1:12

How you approach God, the way you talk to Him, what you call Him says a whole lot about who He is to you and who He is revealed to you as. Many speak to God, send out prayers and approach His throne with elegant and regal language, with much pomp and self-abasement, with lofty words and humble postures, “O God Almighty, Lord and Master and King and Maker”. Is there anything wrong with calling God those things? Not at all! He is all those things, worship Him, He alone deserves that. But Jesus came to give you the right, even authority, to call Him, ‘Daddy! Papa! Baba! Abba!’ with no reservations, no qualms and no pretense, just as a child calls out to his father with total familiarity and confidence that He will be well received. He came to reveal God’s highest love for us by making all who received Him, children of God, dearest, most beloved, most precious children of the Lord.

What’s in a name? Oh so very much. “…you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"” (Gal. 4:6) Today, as you speak to Him, know and relish Daddy’s love for you, His constant embrace of you, His delight to cherish you – as His beloved child, for that is truly who you are in Him – His dearest child. He alone is the perfect Father, our Father forever!
