The secret of serving Christ - Day 19: Thirty Day Meditations to Abundant Life!

We love to emphasize service and  humility. They are indeed the bedrock values of Christ - none could have shown such humility and service as He did. And so we often hear - "serve, serve, serve". Yet, astonishingly, we want to serve Christ when we have never let Him serve us! I mean, think about it... have you ever let Jesus serve you?

That is why Jesus came, you know... "to serve and not to be served." Somehow this has been lost upon the majority of the church and instead we enter churches always hearing about serving God but standing a mile clear of anything to do with the fact that God may actually be in the business of serving us. Take a good, close look at parents and children. Who's doing the serving? Not to mention the caring, providing, loving, caressing, kissing, hugging, feeding, reaffirming, guiding, teaching, disciplining (the good kind), clothing and on and on the list goes. And if we do this as parents, how much more our heavenly Father!

What happens when you serve Christ after you have sat and allowed Him to serve you? Remember the story of Mary and Martha. Jesus comes to their house and Mary -  instead of serving her very important Guest along with His companions does something extremely rude - she just sits at the feet of Jesus imbibing His every word. "Martha, Martha..." Jesus replies to her sister complaining about her lack of zeal in serving (does that sound familiar), "you are worried and troubled by many things, but only ONE thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part which will not be taken from her." (Lk 10:40,41, emphasis mine).

Mary went on to serve in such a spectacular way that the only person Jesus ever singled out as having done something good to Him, was Mary! When Jesus comes to your house, know who is the real servant and choose the good part! Then the rest shall follow... the rest - meaning your spectacular service to Him and true rest too!

One last word - how do we let Christ serve us? We let Him serve us when we drink deeply from the fountains of life, when we sit and savor His sacrifice on the cross, when we rejoice in the forgiveness of our sins and the hope of eternal life, when we seek out all that goodness, sweetness and wonders of the Lord with all our heart. We let Him serve us when He is our sun, our Life... We let Him serve us, when we Abide in Him!

Abide in His presence... Abide in His word... Abide in His love. He's dying to serve you... actually, He already did, but many in the church act like He hasn't. Treasure that sacrifice, His blood is always serving you, cleansing you, washing you, restoring you, healing you, protecting you... the blood of the New Covenant, the Lamb of God - it is always blessing you. That's how you let Him serve you.
