Rest your way to victory

“…the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.” Josh 6:4

The Israelites had just crossed the Jordan into the land of their inheritance. Forty years they had wandered so tantalizingly close and finally they were there. The manna had stopped and they already began eating the fruit of the land. But the country was by no means empty.

Before them lay the city of Jericho – a fortified city closed shut out of dread. God’s instructions to Joshua were rather strange (as usual!). He was told to lead the warriors of the Israelite tribes, along with seven priests, around the city once a day for six days. On the seventh day they were to march seven times around Jericho. Finally on the last day, after all their marching had been done, the priest would then blow their horns and the city would be theirs.

Like the Israelites then, we are now on the other side of the ‘Jordan’ and the whole land of milk and honey is before us. But as you survey your life you may find that strongholds suffocate your joy and prevent you from savoring the inheritance your Savior provided you. You’ve heard how blessed you are and what Jesus accomplished but somehow there are still areas of your life that are glaringly in ruins. How can these strongholds be forever destroyed?

As I mediated on this passage with the Lord I realized that the seventh day was the day of rest. Beloved of God, know that you can’t fight, read or pray your way to these promises but you can rest in His arms, delight in Him and be assured that you will receive them! Joshua took his army, not to wage war, but to walk around a fortress and when the sound of joy and praise was heard, the walls of Jericho fell! So today, just rest in your Father, walk with Him and take the time to enjoy His presence and all that He has put in your path and then see how you will rise and shine with the glory of the Lord! (Isa 60:1)
