The Prince who gave up His throne for you

"Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt." 1 Sam 18:4

David was a shepherd boy destined to be king over his nation though he was of no royal descent. The prophet Samuel had told Saul, the current king, that his son would not sit on his throne. Now Jonathan, the son of Saul, was a man of God, unlike his father. He was the crown prince of the kingdom and grew up expecting to sit on the same seat as his father. Any worldly prince in Jonathan's position would have fought back; he could have sent commandos to assassinate David or through political intrigue crossed him out of the equation. But what he did next was shocking - he entered into a covenant with David and gave him all he had. Jonathan took off his robe and handed it to David – the robe of his authority and nobility. He gave his friend his armor, sword and bow – the armor was his protection, and the sword and bow, his strength. And finally he gave David his belt – that which would hold it all together. Jonathan – whose name means 'Yahowa has given' willingly laid down everything he could at David’s feet, even his position as the crown prince. But Jonathan would not live to see his dearest friend crowned as king. When Jonathan died, all he had was deeded to David – according to the will (or covenant) Jonathan made with him. Friends, do you know that Jesus came down from his throne to grant you His authority and honor, His protection and power? Like Jonathan, Jesus died sealing His covenant with you with His own blood! O how greatly loved you are! And behold, hell trembles for what you will do when you truly believe this. Be blessed today knowing you are the adored friend of Jesus the King, who gave up His throne for you, David’s kin, whose name means ‘beloved’!
